Hummingbird Junkie

Hummingbird hearts beat twelve hundred,
sixty times per minute.

She said her heart was a vibration,
propelling her into the clouds.

Hummingbirds can flap their wings
fifty-five times per second.

It gave her energy, she said,
but it was so much hard work.
So very hard.

A hummingbird requires nectar
every ten to fifteen minutes.

She counted: six rocks, two hours…
enough? There should be more.

Hummingbirds are aggressive, territorial;
they will attack their own reflection in a window.

She said she had been ripped off.
If we knew she had a gun,
we would have tried to stop her.

Hummingbirds migrate south in the winter,
returning north in mid April to early May.

I moved her stuff out when she didn’t come back.
No one has heard from her.
This spring, a new girl finally moved into her apartment.
She’s just a little thing.
