Breakdown of the Features
The TD-1k model of the Roland is one of the most attractive on the market. Because of this, there are quite a few appealing features that should be noted. The aforementioned features include the sensors, module, coach functions, inputs, and much more.
The drum module is one of several vital parts of an electronic drum set. Essentially, it is the computer that configures and interprets the sensor triggers into sound. It is also where you will find the functions and features each individual electronic drum set has to offer. This is where you will find all of your options, like drum kits and sounds as well as metronomes and coaching features. In the case of the Roland TD-1K, the module comes preprogrammed with easy to hard coaching functions, over 100 sound options and 15 drum kits. The interface is user-friendly with and easy to read LED screen used to navigate the 15 kits that come with the set. While recording, you can use the metronome as well as the coaching feature to ensure you aren’t skipping any beats. If this has thrown you off a bit don’t worry, I’ll explain these features in more detail in the sections below.
The versatility and number of sensors are coupled with the accuracy of the of the sensor’s trigger. As you may already know a delay between when you hit the surface of the drum and when sound is emitted from the speaker can affect the accuracy of your beats as well as the rhythm of your play. And since drumming is all about timing this is insanely important that the triggers have nearly instantaneous response times. Though, as the quality of the sensors increases so does the price. This is part of what you are investing in when you purchase this model, as the trigger response time is very accurate, allowing the musician a very realistic playing experience. The First Impression
Initially upon reading the features, the first impression was rather good. After purchasing it, there was no qualms or buyer’s remorse, as I was able to begin playing with ease. With so many drum patterns for potential songs stuck in my head (and the voice memo’s of my phone), I was extremely excited to get started with this kit, and it didn’t let me down. Did I think that I could get this much power out of an electronic drum set? Not in the slightest, but I was pleasantly surprised. The price wasn’t too alarming, as I had done my research on which are high-end and which are low end, so I knew what to expect, but for those who haven’t, you may be shocked at the price (or you may not be). It wasn’t too much of a splurge, though, in comparison with other competitors on the market.
The pros of the Roland TD-1K Electronic Drum Set
As mentioned in the aforementioned section, this particular model is equipped with USB, MP3, and MIDI compatibility, allowing you to use a variety of different electronic devices to record and enhance your music creation experience. It also boasts a number of impressive coaching functions ranging from easy to hard in order to challenge even the most practiced of percussionist and keep you at the top of your game. You can also record your beats onto the set directly using both the metronome and the coaching functions to ensure your beats are on point.
The 15 drum kits the electronic set comes with have a wide range of sound variation to allow you to make music in any genre you choose. This model also allows you to plug in your phone to play along to your favorite songs. The interface is user-friendly with an LED display making practicing, recording, and programming of your electric set easy to set as well as change from complex coaching beats to simple rhythms.
The Downsides of the Roland TD-1K Electronic Drum Set
Fortunately, there are few drawbacks to choosing the Roland when comparing to other models in the same price range. However, nothing is without flaws. Though the number of drum kits and sounds this model comes with seems to be about average in comparison with other electronic drum sets that come with a great deal more options. Specifically, in regards to the direct to set recording of your own beats. Whereas other sets will allow you to record up to 5 different beats of your own to lay new tracks, the Roland seems to only let you record one at a time. Though when you upload the recordings onto your PC, you can use software to overlay as many tracks as you like.
What’s in the Box?
In the contents of this package, you’ll find three tom pads, three cymbal pads, one snare pad, a kick pedal, the plastic and hardware pieces to put this all together, LEDs, and more. However, it’s imperative to note that there is no Throne and no kick pad within this Roland TD-1k electronic drum set.
The Final Verdict
Overall, the Roland TD-1K makes for a fairly impressive piece of equipment and judging by the price tag, they aren’t shy about it either. The Roland is a reasonably priced electric drum set for all the amenities and innovative use of dual-zone sensor technology. I believe you would be hard-pressed to find something better for without adding to the price tag, either with the initial cost or the upgrade necessary to match what programs Roland already comes with. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a reliable piece of electronic drum equipment.
